Tripura Professor suspended after viral video shows ‘inappropriate’ act with student

AGARTALA, July 25: The Tripura Government has suspended an Assistant Professor Dr Santanu Majumder of Chemistry following the circulation of a purported video on social media that allegedly shows the teacher in a compromising situation with a female student inside a college laboratory.

Raval H Kumar, Special Secretary of the education department in an order said that  as per a viral video in social media, it appears that D. Santanu Majumder, Assistant Professor of GDC, Kamalpur, Dhalai, Tripura and a student of the college was seen behaving inappropriately in the college.

“….a preliminary report was submitted by the disciplinary committee of the College which was forwarded by the Principal of GDC, Kamalpur. WHEREAS, the report forwarded by the Principal, GDC, Kamalpur reflected that Dr. Santanu Majumder, Assistant Professor, GDC, Kamalpur, Dhalai Tripura confessed that it was a mistake on his part to be involved in the inappropriate act”, the order reads.

It said by commiting such an act in the College prentises Dr Santanu Majumder has failed to maintain the sanctity, dignity and decorum of the Institute and also foiled the poise of the teaching profession.

“NOW, THEREFORE, the undersigned, in exercise of the powers conferred by Sub-Rule (1) of Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1965, hereby places the said Dr Santanu Majumder, Assistant Professor, GDC, Kamalpur, Dhalai Tripura under suspension with immediate effect. It is further ordered that during the period of suspension, the headquarters of Dr Santanu Majumder, Assistant Professor will be at ICV College, Belonia, South Tripura and the said Dr Majumder shall report to the Principal, ICV College, Belonia, South Tripura and shall not leave the headquarters without obtaining prior permission of the undersigned”, the order said.
