SENAPATI, July 20 (NNN): The United Naga Council (UNC) has raised strong objections to the government’s approach regarding the establishment and operation of semi-permanent relief camps in Naga regions. In a recent statement, the UNC expressed concern over the ongoing chaos and violence in Manipur since May 3, 2023. Despite the turmoil, the Naga people have maintained neutrality, extending prayers and sympathy to all victims from both communities.
Under the leadership of the United Naga Council (UNC), a peace committee was formed to foster peace-building efforts with the belief that dialogue can resolve any issue. The UNC emphasised that they have consciously refrained from reacting to provocations from both sides and have shared their concerns with leaders from the two communities and the Manipur state government, as well as the Central government, in hopes of restoring normalcy in the state.

Given Manipur’s diverse composition of mixed communities with varying political aspirations and overlapping claims to land and rights, the UNC urged the authorities to handle the situation with caution and proactivity. They stressed that any government measures to mitigate the crisis should not harm the positions of other communities or threaten their rights.
While acknowledging the relief efforts taken by the government, the UNC expressed strong disapproval of the recent office memorandum issued by Manipur’s Home department on June 9, 2023. The memorandum outlined guidelines for setting up and operating semi-permanent relief camps for displaced persons, which the UNC believes could lead to adverse demographic imbalances and potential breaches of peace in various districts of the state.
As a result, the UNC firmly discouraged the government’s policy on establishing and operating semi-permanent relief camps in Naga areas. They asserted that they will not permit the construction of any permanent or semi-permanent structures, except for immediate temporary relief arrangements in Naga regions to address the plight of displaced individuals.
