USTM joins ASACS in World AIDS day celebration

GUWAHATI, Dec 1: The department of zoology, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) in association with Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) celebrated World AIDS day on Thursday with the theme ‘To equalize’ to raise awareness about HIV-AIDS and also to show support and concern to the people affected by it.

The programme began with a rally organised at Gauhati Medical college and hospital premises by ASACS under the department of health, government of Assam where students and faculties of zoology department and people of around 15 other educational, healthcare institutions and NGOs participated.

The rally was flagged off by Mrs. Pomi Baruah, ACS, Project Director, ASACS and Mr. Elvis Ali Hazarika, international swimmer from Assam. Mrs. Baruah thanked all students and participants for their involvement in generating such large-scale interest and raising awareness for HIV/AIDS.

The students of USTM later proceeded to Basistha village where they enacted a street play on‘Awareness for HIV/AIDS’ which showcased the common reasons and myths behind HIV/AIDS. The programme ended with distribution of IEC materials to the general public and students were widely commended and encouraged for their efforts to throw light on this Incurable disease.
