West Garo Hills DC inaugurates Khelo India Centre at Tura

TURA, Nov 9: West Garo Hills deputy commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, inaugurated the Khelo India Centre at Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Tura in the presence of the District Sports officer, Saljagring M Marak, the school principal, Arlinda M Marak, the teachers, students and other dignitaries on Wednesday.

While inaugurating the centre, the deputy commissioner said that sports is as important as studies to the students and urged the students to grab the opportunities being provided through the centre. He also informed that there are two such centres in West Garo Hills out of which one has been given to the school. For encouraging the athletes in the district, he said that Turathon, covering a distance of 42 Kms. will be organised on 12 December next and urged the students to participate in the event.

The District Sports officer, while highlighting about the Khelo India Centre, said that with the inauguration of the centre, the district is hopeful of producing an Olympian from amongst the athletes.

The principal of the school, while delivering the welcome address, informed that Khelo India is a national program for reviving sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in the country and establish India as a great sporting nation. She also informed that 30 students from the school have been selected to undergo training and Rosina Ch Momin, a national athlete and the former student of the school, have been appointed as the coach for the school.
