TEZPUR, Dec 3: The Sonitpur District Para Athletes team bags ten medals in the first North east Para sports meet 2024 organised by the Paralympic Association of Assam in association with the Paralympic Committee of India at Guwahati-Sarusajai stadium from November 27 to 29.
Sonitpur District Para-Sports Association secretary Geet Gunjan Deka informed that nine para-athletes represented Sonitpur District in this event. The team included officials Amit Raj Konwar, district president, Geet Gunjan Deka, general secretary, and Bimpi Hazarika, treasurer.
He also informed that Sonitpur Para Athletes clinched a total of 10 medals consisting of 3 Golds and 7 Silvers Medals for Assam. Sandhya Bhumij won the Gold Medal in Boccia (Category BC4 -Female) and Silver Medal by Seema Thakur in Boccia (Category BC4 – Female), while Trishna Devi won Gold Medal in Discuss (Category F55/56/57 – Women), Tarangita Das grabbed Silver Medal in Shot Put (Category F55/56/57 – Women), Yakub Ali grabbed Silver Medal in Shot Put (Category F42 Male) and Silver Medal in Discuss (Category F42), Moudoodur Rahman Choudhury grabbed Silver Medal in Discuss (Category F44 – Male) and Silver Medal in Shot Put (Category T13 – Male), Saddam Hussain won Gold Medal in Long Jump (Category T45/46/47- Male) and Silver Medal in 200 meter Running (Category T45/46/47 – Male) with other Sonitpur Para Athletes Hanif Ali and Hareram Sutradhar Participated in the event.
Briefing the event president of the association, Amit Raj Konwar said that Assam Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Pijush Hazarika officially inaugurated the event in the presence of Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, organising President with several other dignitaries.
“More than 550 Para Athletes participated from 6 states. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered an inspiring speech at the closing ceremony and presented the trophy to the winning state.” Amit Raj Konwar said adding last year they had made history by winning 9 medals in the Para State Meet.
“This year, we’ve surpassed it with 15 medals in the Para State Meet and 10 medals in the 1st North East Para Sports Meet for Sonitpur District.” He emphasized the goals of Para Sports, encouraging members, volunteers, and persons with disabilities (PWD) to actively support and participate in these activities. He also invited interested individuals to contact the Sonitpur District Para Sports Association at Edupur Foundation, at Tezpur, for details on joining and training opportunities.
