Jorhat, July 18: The district commissioner (formerly known as deputy commissioner) of Jorhat, Pulak Mahanta, has directed the district transport officer (DTO) and officials and employees of the DTO office to intensify efforts in cracking down on individuals found violating traffic rules, aiming to ensure road safety.
During the District Development Committee (DDC) meeting held at the Conference Hall of the DC’s office complex, the district commissioner chaired the meeting and instructed the DTO to take stringent action against reckless drivers in accordance with the provisions of the law. The primary objective is to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of road users.
The DC emphasised imposing fines on those found violating traffic rules and, if necessary, revoking the licenses of drivers and vehicles. Mahanta further instructed the NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited) authorities to expedite the ongoing four-laning construction work on NH-715 (formerly 37) passing through the district.
The DC urged the authorities to ensure proper protective measures such as barricading, warning signage with radium reflectors, and other necessary precautions at all construction sites, uncovered drains near the road, and diversion points. This responsibility lies with the firms and contractors engaged in the project.
It is worth mentioning that in May of this year, the district administration filed an FIR against the NHIDCL authorities after an ONGC official lost his life when the vehicle he was driving fell into a partially constructed bridge over the Jagduar rivulet on NH-715 in Teok. A case was registered at Teok Police Station.
Mahanta, while assessing the preparedness of concerned department officials to tackle any flood-related situations during the current rainy season, emphasised the need to remain vigilant round the clock.
Additionally, the DC discussed preparations for the upcoming implementation of the state government’s proposed Amrit Vriksha program, which aims to plant one crore saplings across the state later this year. The progress of ongoing projects and schemes in the district by various government departments and agencies was also reviewed during the meeting.
In attendance at the meeting were heads of departments and agencies in the district, officials from Jorhat district and Titabar sub-divisional administrations, the chairperson of Jorhat Municipal Board, and the CEO of Jorhat Zilla Parishad.
