Commit and dedicate towards wellbeing of the society: Nagaland Guv

GUWAHATI, July 28: Nagaland governor La Ganesan urged the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland (IRCSN) to commit and dedicate towards the wellbeing and welfare of the fellow citizens and society as a whole.

Addressing the 36th Annual General Meeting of IRCSN at Dr.Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, here, governor La Ganesan, who is also the president of IRCSN, said he was filled with gratitude for the incredible work done by IRCSN and its volunteers in the past year.

He commended the efforts of the Red Cross in providing relief and support to the fire victims of Solou village in Myanmar where more than 59 houses were burnt.

He said that IRCSN had been at the forefront of delivering aid and relief supplies to those affected even beyond the boundary, adding that this commendable act of solidarity demonstrated the values and principles that underpin the Red Cross movement. He also thanked the IRCSN for swift response and assistance in times of crisis.

Underscoring the importance of fostering strong partnerships and collaborations with government agencies, non-governmental organizations and the community at large to achieve their goals, IRCSN president reminded that “we must build a resilient and compassionate society that stands ready to support and uplift those in need through oneness.” Governor expressed gratitude to all the members of the IRCSN for their unwavering dedication and selfless service and further urged them to carry forward the noble legacy of the Red Cross and continue to serve as a beacon of hope and support for those in need.

In his vice-presidential address, state chief minister and IRCSN vice president Neiphiu Rio also commended the pioneers and the members who had been selflessly and diligently helping those in need.

Stating that as a community Nagas understand the importance of caring for others, especially during times of calamities, the chief minister said “Our tribal culture emphasizes the value of sharing with our neighbours and friends, similar to the principles of the Red Cross society.”

Rio said today the International Red Cross system aligns with “our values and allows us to extend our assistance” to the poor and needy. Through this system, he said “we can make a significant difference in the lives of those who require help.”

He also called upon the government to take a proactive stand and declare a strong stance against drugs, whether it be in terms of consumption or smuggling. On the sale of illicit liquor, Rio expressed concern over the consumption of adulterated liquor.

He stressed the importance of education in order to discourage people from engaging in illegal activities such as smuggling alcohol or drugs and to prevent the proliferation of drug peddlers.

IRCSN vice president also underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and organizations like the Red Cross in tackling these problems.

Rio appealed to the district IRCSN presidents and its members to educate the people, especially the youth and the students not to indulge in illicit drugs. The chief minister asserted that the government was trying to declare a war against smuggling and use of illicit drugs in the state.

Earlier, IRCSN chairperson Abeni TCK delivered welcome address, St. Joseph College, Jakhama principal Fr. Keduolhou George Angami gave the invocation while Christ the King Church Choir presented song titled “Hallelujah”.

Report on business session was presented by IRCSN general secretary Akhale V. Khamo followed by decoration of patrons and vice patrons and presentation of awards by chief minister Neiphiu Rio to nine patrons. The vote of thanks was proposed by IRCSN managing committee member R. Rose Chakhesang. Khyochano TCK chaired the programme.
