BISWANATH CHARIALI, Aug 31: The mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis to eliminate filariasis was kicked off on Thursday at Biswanath along with three other block primary health centres in the state.
The inaugural session was held at the conference hall of Biswanath BPHC and was attended by Dr Neha Jadav, SDO Civil, Biswanath subdivision cum ADC, Dr Jogen Chandra Bay, joint director of Health Services, Biswanath, Dr Aliza Deka, district surveillance officer, Amarjyoti Borthakur, chairman of Biswanath Town Committee, Dr Jonali Gogoi, superintendent of Biswanath Chariali Subdivisional Hospital, Dr Dulumani Saikia, SDMO, and other dignitaries.

In the inaugural session, a total of ten people were given the preventive medicine for filariasis. The ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and the health workers has started provide the medicines to all public by visiting their door steps from Thursday and will continue till September 9.
Only four primary health centres, including Hapjan BPHC of Tinsukia, Rangapara BPHC of Sonitpur, Biswanath BPHC, and Behali BPHC of Biswanath district, have been shortlisted for the pilot project.
The MDA is a preventive measure to stop the spread of filariasis. Filariasis is a parasitic disease that is transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes. The disease can cause elephantiasis, a condition in which the limbs and genitals become swollen.
