GUWAHATI, Oct 1: An injured one-horned rhino that had been spotted earlier in Kaliabor tea garden has
sadly died from its injuries on Sunday. The rhino’s carcass was discovered on the grounds of Kaliabor
Manor Resort near Silghat.
According to sources, the injured rhino had ventured out of Kaziranga National Park approximately two
months ago and had been roaming in and around Silghat Tea Garden for several days.
It has been reported that the rhino was regularly sighted in the area, with workers from Silghat tea
garden acknowledging its presence. However, there are allegations that the rhino did not receive proper
treatment for its injuries. The workers claim that while some forest department personnel occasionally
visited the area when elephants or rhinos were nearby, they were not able to provide adequate care to
the injured animal.
One worker stated, “We usually spot the rhino three to four times a day. I think it is the department’s
fault as no one noticed or cared to treat the rhino’s injuries. However, I saw the beat officer coming here
twice; I won’t lie about that. They would usually visit when there is an elephant or a rhino in the vicinity.
But there is one person by the name Ali who would usually come here. He would check on the rhino,
provide water to the injured animal, and then leave. The rhino has been loitering around for the last two
months.”
The death of this rhino highlights the importance of prompt and effective conservation efforts to protect
endangered species like the one-horned rhinoceros, especially.
