GUWAHATI, Oct 7: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a pivotal meeting on Saturday to address the persistent issue of flooding that has affected Guwahati and its adjacent areas. The meeting provided a platform for discussing various facets of the flooding, including rainfall data and satellite imagery, which were presented to the chief minister.

In response to the unfolding situation, chief minister Sarma swiftly issued directives to government officials to implement a series of mitigation measures aimed at alleviating the impact of flooding in the region.
Taking to social media, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma articulated the government’s proactive approach, stating, “We will bolster the rivulet system around the city to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall in a short period.”
This announcement comes as Assam continues to grapple with persistent downpours, leading the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Guwahati to issue an orange alert for six districts in lower Assam.
As per RMC Guwahati’s predictions, heavy rainfall is expected in the lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar, South Salmara, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, and Dhubri till Sunday. The meteorological department has also issued heavy rain alerts for other northeastern states.
The city of Guwahati has been dealing with the consequences of unrelenting rains, resulting in flooding in numerous low-lying districts over the past few days. These inundations have submerged streets, presenting new challenges for both residents and authorities.
