Addressing the beneficiaries, CEM Gorlosa emphasised that this initiative would benefit a total of 27,722 individuals, urging those yet to enrol for family ration cards to contact officials to safeguard their entitlements.

In his speech, CEM Gorlosa elaborated on the two types of ration cards issued under the Food Security Act, namely the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card and the Priority Household (PHH) card, based on the financial status of the beneficiaries.

On the occasion, secretary Partha Sarathi Jahari provided insights into the National Food Security Act 2013, in force in Assam since December 2015, aiming to ensure the food security of the population.

According to the 2011 census, nearly 2.52 crore individuals in Assam are covered under the Food Security Act, with 84.17% in rural areas and 60.35% in urban areas. Under this Act, AAY families receive 35 kg of free rice per month, while each member of the Priority Household (PHH) receives 5 kg of free rice monthly.

Since January 2023, the Union government has provided free rice across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. With a target of 2.52 crore beneficiaries, Assam has already achieved coverage for approximately 2.00 crore individuals. Moreover, the Assam Cabinet has decided to extend the scheme to cover an additional 40 lakh people in the state.

Speaking further, CEM Gorlosa also commended the dynamic leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the successful inclusion of 42,85,745 new beneficiaries and the registration of 10,73,489 new families for ration cards in the state.

Council chairman Mohit Hojai shared that those who have linked their Aadhaar numbers to their ration cards can now receive their entitled rations in any state of the country through the designated portal.

The dignitaries present on the occasion included Niranjan Hojai and Donphainon Thaosen, along with CEM Debolal Gorlosa, chairman Mohit Hojai, and secretary Partha Jahari.
