SHILLONG, March 9: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) earlier on Friday expressed strong opposition against the attempt by the NEST (India) to restart the uranium mining project in Meghalaya.

The NEST (India) had recently submitted a DPR to the Union Minister of State, Department of Atomic Energy Dr Jitendra Singh for restarting the uranium mining project in the state.

In a statement, FKJGP general secretary Eldie N Lyngdoh said that the state government is demanding not to allow such organizations to create law and order situation in the state due to the issue of uranium mining.

“In fact, the issue of uranium mining in Meghalaya is already a closed chapter due to stiff opposition from the public,” he said. He also warned the NEST (India) to refrain from making such an attempt to revive the uranium mining failing which the FKJGP would have no option but to step in and do what is necessary.

“The FKJGP along with other NGOs, will never allow mining of uranium in Meghalaya as it is a matter of life and death of the people and the state,” he stated. (NNN)
