‘World Water Day’ observed in North Garo Hills

Sensitisation programme on water conservation held as part of ‘World Water Day’ celebrations

GUWAHATI, March 22: The public health engineering department along DWSM, JJM, RWS Division, observed the ‘World Water Day’ on Friday by organizing a function at the Mendipathar Cooperative Society Hall in Resubelpara in North Garo Hills district.

The function highlighted the need to conserve water. A series of programmes were held across the area to spread awareness on the importance of water. A group of cycle enthusiasts called A∙we Pedallers could be seen spreading awareness on water among the masses during a cycle rally taken out in the area on the occasion.

In the field of operations and maintenance under Jal Jeevan Mission, Kontolguri Songma VWSC was adjudged the best performing Village Water and Sanitation Committee.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest during the programme, additional deputy commissioner of North Garo Hills district, Tennystar R Marak called for collective effort for preservation of water by initiating effective measures to check water sustainability.

“As compared to the rest of the country, our area has an abundance of water resources. However, unscrupulous and unchecked usage of water could one day bring about the inevitable water crisis as is going on in major towns and cities” said ADC, Tennystar Marak.

He reiterated that there should be a collective cooperation from all stakeholders needs to come in place for the preservation of water. All should understand the significance of maintaining this necessary resource for the future generations.

Executive engineer of the public health engineering department, Sokima Najiar in his address highlighted the theme of the programme “Water for Peace” wherein he spoke of the pressing issues of water crisis all around the world and opined that an amicable solution to resolve water crisis is by protecting, conserving and sharing water.

Status of the implementation of JJM in the district was also highlighted wherein the DPM, DPMU Silgrak Sangma informed that the district stands at 82.16 per cent in terms of providing tap water connection to every household.

NR Marak, senior SDM and HO and VWSC president, Kontolguri Songma, were among others who spoke on the issue.
