Joyanta Basumatary clinches Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat

KOKRAJHAR, June 5: In a spirit of peace and tranquility among the communities in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), NDA-backed United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) candidate, Joyanta Basumatary, won the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency (ST), defeating BPF candidate Kampa Borgoyary by a margin of 52,877 votes in the Lok Sabha election result counting on Tuesday. Notably, the Lok Sabha election saw a neck-to-neck contest between NDA-backed UPPL candidate Joyanta Basumatary and BPF candidate Kampa Borgoyary, where UPPL candidate Joyanta Basumatary emerged victorious in the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency by a margin of 52,877 votes, reclaiming the respected Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency in line with the people’s aspirations and hopes. Joyanta Basumatary secured 484,801 votes while Kampa Borgoyary received 431,924 votes in the election.

It is noteworthy that Naba Kumar Sarania was elected to the Lok Sabha for two consecutive terms from 2014 to 2024 due to sentimental voting polarisation within the Bodo belt. However, this time, people cutting across communities came forward to elect a representative from the Bodo belt, and accordingly elected UPPL candidate Joyanta Basumatary as MP from the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency. The voting percentage was recorded at over 83 percent in the Kokrajhar constituency, and people expressed their well-being gestures across the region.

Party leaders and well-wishers of UPPL, BJP, AGP including CEM of BTR, and UPPL supremo Pramod Boro, Assam cabinet ministers Ranjit Kumar Dass, Urkhao Gwra Brahma, MP of Rajya Sabha and UPPL working president Rwngwra Narzary, UPPL general secretaries Raju Kumar Narzary, Madhab Chandra Chetry, greeted and offered warm welcome and felicitation to the newly elected Kokrajhar Lok Sabha MP Joyanta Basumatary at a program held at the UPPL central office and Central Election Steering Committee office in Kokrajhar town.

The chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region and UPPL supremo Pramod Boro extended warm congratulations to Joyanta Basumatary, the newly elected MP of Kokrajhar Lok Sabha, and offered warm felicitation to Basumatary with traditional Aronai amidst the presence of a huge party leader and well-wishers. He emphasised that Joyanta Basumatary’s victory is the victory of the people in this parliamentary election in Kokrajhar. He reiterated that the newly elected MP and UPPL party are fully committed to working for the all-round development of society in the days to come. “The victory will usher in the development of peace and tranquility in the Bodoland region. People cutting across communities waited to elect a new MP member from the Kokrajhar constituency, and hence elected Joyanta Basumatary in the elections,” Boro added.

Minister Dass, while attending the felicitation ceremony in Kokrajhar, stated that people from the Kokrajhar constituency have eagerly chosen the people’s choice MP to bring about healthy welfare and development of the people in the region, and the society will witness a massive ushering of sustainable development in the days to come ahead.
