Margherita mourns loss of veteran Congress leader, Lukam Tulum

MARGHERITA, June 18: Veteran Congress leader of the Margherita sub-division and renowned Tangsa leader, Lukam Tulum, passed away at the age of 93 on June 12 at his residence in Kharankong village under Khumchai Gaon Panchayat of 83 number Margherita constituency of Tinsukia. On Tuesday, Lukam Tulum’s ‘Adya Shraddha’ was held at his residence.

Many senior and veteran Congress leaders of Tinsukia district, All Assam Mech Kachari Students, Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee, Tangsa Script Development Committee, Tirap Changlang Longding People’s Front, All Man (Tai Speaking) Student Union, All Assam Tangsa Student Union, Ledo Malu Gaon village pradhan Tehan Hakun, and many others attended the ‘Adya Shraddha’ and paid rich tribute to the departed soul.

Pallab Shyam Wailung, general secretary and spokesperson of the Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee, said that veteran Congress leader and renowned Tangsa leader Lukam Tulum was part of the Burmese Army and fought during the Second World War.

Wailung noted that Lukam Tulum was a dedicated Congress leader who was closely associated with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, and Tarun Gogoi. Hiteswar Saikia had offered Tulum a ticket to contest from the Margherita constituency, but he declined, and Kul Bahadur Chetry was given the ticket instead, becoming an MLA for three consecutive terms.

Sengkhum Mossang, general secretary of the Tangsa Script Development Committee, stated that Lukam Tulum was a pioneer of the Tangsa language, enabling the celebration of World Mother Language Day on February 21.

Mossang also highlighted Tulum’s immense contributions to the upliftment of the Tangsa community, particularly through the Wihu-Kuh Festival, the traditional festival of the Tangsa tribe, where Tulum imparted prayer songs and blessings.

A senior Congress leader from Digboi remarked that Lukam Tulum was a versatile person who remained with the Congress party throughout his life and never switched to other political parties.

The Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee and All Assam Mech Kachari Students conveyed their deep condolences to the bereaved family members of the renowned Tangsa leader Lukam Tulum.
