GUWAHATI, Aug 23: An interactive session focusing on the scientific rearing of mithun, locally known as ‘mithang’ in Dimasa, was held on Friday at the CEM’s Conference Hall at the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) secretariat. Organised by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of Dima Hasao in collaboration with ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Mediziphema, Nagaland, the meeting aimed to explore the potential of mithun rearing as a viable income source for farmers in the Dima Hasao district.
The session was chaired by the CEM in-charge and NCHAC executive member for Medical, Samuel Changsan, with the presence of other executive members, including Monjit Naiding, Donpainon Thaosen, and Samsing Ingti.
Dr Girish Patel, director of ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland, highlighted the absence of official records of mithun in Assam, noting that the species has been most prevalent in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Mizoram. He emphasised that with scientific rearing practices, mithun could significantly benefit the farmers of Dima Hasao, pointing out the district’s suitability for this livestock. He also mentioned ongoing government efforts to secure funding to support these initiatives.
Mithun, a domesticated bovine species native to the northeastern states of India, holds cultural, social, and economic importance among indigenous communities. Valued for its lean, high-protein meat, mithun has the potential to become a key resource for sustainable agriculture in the region.
The session was attended by several notable figures, including Dr KK Baruah, ICAR GB member from New Delhi, and other distinguished scientists from ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland, as well as officials from the NCHAC and Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
