MARGHERITA, March 12: The Bom Singpho memorial Bhawan in Inthem, Margherita which was constructed in 1995 to honour the freedom fighter’s sacrifice, lies in a dilapidated condition today.
This neglect is particularly striking given the ongoing “Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations, which commemorate India’s 75th year of independence.
Bom Singpho, a prominent leader who revolted against the British government, was captured in 1830 and later sent to Dhaka jail, his descendants who still reside in Bisa Gaon,Ledo under the Khumchai gaon panchayat of Margherita Co-District await recognition and equal treatment for their ancestor’s sacrifices.
Despite the efforts of the Margherita Co-District administration which honoured Bisa Nong Singpho, the great-grandson of Bom Singpho in the year 2022, the memorial Bhawan of Bom Singpho remains in disrepair.
The Tinsukia deputy administration and Margherita Co-District administration have been criticised for not taking action to renovate the Bhawan, as highlighted by Bhogeswar Shyam, retired secretary of the Department of Handloom and Textiles government of Assam.
Bom Singpho, a prominent freedom fighter, led a rebellion against the British in 1830 and was subsequently captured and sent to Dhaka jail.
“Despite his significant contribution to India’s struggle for independence, Bom Singpho remains a forgotten hero,” said Bhogeswar Shyam.
“In 1995, when I was posted as an Extra Additional Commissioner(EAC) at Tinsukia district an amount of Rs 2.5 lakhs was sanctioned by than Lakhimpur District MP Balin Kuli from the MP LAD fund to construct a Bhawan in Bom Singpho’s memory at Inthem, opposite the Inthem Mungong Buddha Vihar but unfortunately, the funds were allegedly siphoned off by vested interest individuals, resulting in the construction of a substandard Bhawan that eventually collapsed” said Bhogeswar Shyam.
“Despite Bom Singpho’s significant role in India’s freedom struggle, he remains ignored and forgotten and we request to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take appropriate measures to protect the memorial Bhawan of Bom Singpho” said Bhogeswar Shyam.
