HAMREN, April 12: At a BJP ‘Mass Joining’ programme held in Taseng, West Karbi Anglong, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, expressed confidence in the party’s growing popularity, attributing it to the developmental work carried out by the government.
Addressing the gathering, Ronghang said, “People are joining the BJP after witnessing the good work done by the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
He welcomed Chandra Sing Phangcho, Finance Secretary of the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) district committee, and Robinson Phangcho of the All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) into the party, adding, “We can now work together for the betterment of the region.”
The CEM also praised Diphu’s first-time BJP MP, Amar Sing Tisso, for raising the issue of implementing Article 244(A) in Parliament.
This article provides for the creation of an autonomous state within Assam — a long-standing demand in the hill districts of Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, and West Karbi Anglong.
Ronghang recalled that the BJP has been committed to the cause even before coming to power.
Historically, the ASDC was a dominant regional party in the hill districts, including the then unified Karbi Anglong and NC Hills (now Dima Hasao), while the APHLC, under its president J.I. Kathar, a retired civil servant, remains a vocal critic of the BJP in these regions.
Speaking to the media after the event, Ronghang claimed that opposition workers and supporters from 20 polling stations — around 2,000 people — had joined the BJP.
“In the next election, the BJP will secure a thumping majority in Amri,” he asserted.
Amri is a newly created Legislative Assembly constituency in West Karbi Anglong and will go to the polls for the first time in the next state election.
Also present at the event were Deputy Chairman of Hill Area Small Scale Industries Limited, Arun Terang; KAAC Deputy Chairman Avijit Kro; MP Amar Sing Tisso; Members of Autonomous Council Head Sing Rongphar and Pawan Kumar; and KAAC Executive Member Rina Terangpi.
