Lat Mandal, Ranger caught red handed while accepting bribes

GUWAHATI, Aug 3: Two more Assam government employees – Madan Nath and Debabrata Gogoi were caught red handed by two different teams of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption, Assam on Wednesday for accepting bribes. According to the Directorate, Madan Nath works as Lat Mandal at the office of the Circle officer, Nagarbera revenue circle under Kamrup district while Debabrata Gogoi is designated as Forest Range Officer, Lakhipur under Cachar district of Barak valley.

Lat Mandal Nath was caught red handed while taking bribe at the circle officer’s office premises. Other hand, Ranger Gogoi was trapped on the National Highway along Pallarbond under Lakhipur police station of Cachar district.

Notably, on July 29, last, the directorate of vigilance and anti corruption arrested Morigaon district Superintendent of Excise Barsha Bora Bordoloi and a dealing assistant of the block education extension office, khowang on similar charges.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption said that Lat Mandal Nath had demanded a sum of rupees one lakh as bribe from the complainant for settling the issue of digging of a pond under Chief Minister Amrit Sarovar Yojana of MGNREGA scheme in Sijupara Gaon Panchayat. “Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached us to take needful legal action against the Lat Mandal,” the Directorate said.

Accordingly, a special team of the Directorate laid a trap on Wednesday in the office of the Circle Officer, Nagarvera and as planned, Lat Mandal Nath was caught red handed at about 3:30 Pm immediately after he received a bribe of rupees twenty thousand from the complainant. The money was immediately seized by the team and a case has been registered in ACB Police Station vide ACB P.S case no – 21/2022 U/S 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Nath.

Other hand, the Directorate said that Gogoi had been demanding a sum of rupees twenty thousand as bribe from the complainant over the last couple of months. “The complainant owns a timber shop for which he has a license. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached us to take legal action against Ranger Gogoi,” the Directorate said.

Accordingly, a trap was laid on Wednesday by a team of the Directorate. As planned, the team caught Ranger Gogoi red handed while receiving the bribe of rupees fifteen thousand on National Highway at Pallarbond under Lakhipur PS, District Cachar.

On seeing the team of the Directorate, the Ranger ran away in a vehicle along with the bribe money in order to escape impending apprehension. However, the team was able to overpower and apprehend him only after placing an improvised blockade on the highway after a hot chase of about one Kilometre.

In this regard, a case has been registered in ACB Police Station vide ACB P.S case no – 22/2022 U/S 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against the public servant.
