DIPHU, May 23: Welfare measures for Safai Karmacharis in Karbi Anglong were reviewed on Thursday during a meeting at the Circuit House, Diphu, an official statement said on Friday.
As per the statement, the meeting was chaired by Nirola Phangchopi, ACS, deputy commissioner of Karbi Anglong.
The meeting focused on uplifting the social, economic, and educational standards of Safai Karmacharis and their dependents, and on reviewing their access to government welfare schemes and entitlements.
The meeting was attended by Heads of Departments (HoDs), representatives from banking institutions, the Additional Superintendent of Police, Diphu, and Safai Karmacharis from various government institutions.
Earlier in the day, Baijnath Basfore visited several government and private institutions in Diphu, including Diphu Medical College, schools, and the Municipal Board, to assess the working conditions of Safai Karmacharis.
The review meeting was convened based on his observations.
During the meeting, the deputy commissioner emphasised the vital role of Safai Karmacharis in maintaining institutional hygiene and cleanliness. She urged all officials to ensure that these workers receive the respect and benefits they rightfully deserve.
Basfore directed all departments to report the number of Safai Karmacharis employed under them and to verify whether they are receiving the minimum wage — ₹10,097 for unskilled and ₹18,000 for skilled workers — or salaries in line with government norms for permanent employees. He also stressed the importance of providing safety kits, biannual health checkups, and coverage under relevant insurance and welfare schemes.
Departments without Safai Karmacharis were advised to submit proposals to the District Administration or the Government of Assam for further action.
