GUWAHATI, June 17: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Tuesday carried out an eviction drive near Byelane number 3, Kedar Road under the AT Road flyover.
The removal of the illegal encroachments was a long-pending demand of the residents as the area had become a hub of anti-social activities.

The eviction drive, which is seen as a major step towards urban renewal and public safety, was conducted under the leadership of GMC Councillor of Ward No. 15 Saurav Jhunjhunwala.
During the drive, five beggars were also rescued and relocated as part of a broader rehabilitation effort. A scrapyard that had encroached upon public space was dismantled by GMC officials.
GMC was assisted by Bharalumukh Police and the Social Welfare department in carrying out the operation.
Welcoming the GMC’s action, a large number of local residents lauded the initiative taken by Councillor Jhunjhunwala in this regard.
Munidra Mahanta, Deputy Enforcement Officer of GMC, and Santosh Kutum from the Department of Social Welfare provided vital support in their official capacities in making the drive successful.
Speaking at the site, Councillor Jhunjhunwala stated, “This is just the beginning. Within the next three months, this entire area will be beautified and transformed. We are committed to ensuring that no anti-social or illegal activities take place here again. Our goal is to create a cleaner and safer Guwahati for all residents.”
The initiative marks a significant step forward in the city’s mission to enhance public spaces and promote community well-being.
