DIBRUGARH, June 25: The 128-year-old Chaulkhowa Jama Masjid in Dibrugarh was demolished on Monday to make way for the construction and upgradation of a major drainage system from Bokul to the Sessa Bridge, as part of the district administration’s flood mitigation efforts.
The demolition, carried out in the Chaulkhowa area, was conducted following due legal procedures, including land acquisition.
Compensation for the acquired land is currently under process, according to the Circle Officer of Dibrugarh West Revenue Circle.
The officer also thanked the local public for their cooperation during the process.
In the wake of the demolition, misinformation on social media alleging forced eviction by the district administration led to public confusion. In response, the Dibrugarh District Administration held a press conference at the Municipal Hall to clarify the matter.
The briefing was led by Dibrugarh Municipal Board Commissioner Jay Vikas and Executive Officer Novas Das, and attended by members of the Chaulkhowa Jamat Committee, including its president Md Liaquat Ali and other senior representatives.
Both the administration and the masjid committee jointly clarified that the mosque was demolished based on mutual agreement, following a lawful land acquisition process.
They reiterated that the decision was taken in the greater interest of the town, as the drainage upgrade is a critical component of Dibrugarh’s infrastructure plan to address chronic flooding.
The new drainage channel from Bokul to the Sessa River is expected to significantly reduce waterlogging and improve urban infrastructure in the flood-prone town.
