KOKRAJHAR, July 3: NTPC Bongaigaon at Salakati launched the 2025 edition of the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) on July 1 with a ceremonial inauguration held at its premises.
The programme commenced in the presence of Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Masanda Partin, IAS, Head of Project Arnab Maitra, and Kasturi Maitra, President of Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club.
Now in its fourth year, the GEM initiative is designed to promote the holistic development of rural girls aged 10 to 12.
This year, 40 girls from 12 schools located near the NTPC Bongaigaon project site have been selected to take part in the month-long programme.
The initiative aims to build self-confidence, leadership, and a sense of social responsibility among young girls through structured modules and creative engagement.
The inaugural programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and the NTPC theme song, followed by a short film on GEM 2025 activities, cultural performances by students from Bal Bhawan and Notre Dame Academy, and an impactful stage act on the theme of educating the girl child.
Testimonials from GEM alumni were also featured, offering insights into the transformation experienced by past participants.
Senior officials of NTPC and dignitaries including Debarata Kar, CGM (O&M); Soumya Kar, Vice President of Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club; LN Meitei, Commandant, CISF; Amit Kr Asthana, Head of HR; representatives of unions, welfare bodies, and parents were present at the launch.
In her keynote address, DC Masanda Partin emphasised the role of girl empowerment in strengthening families and communities.
Arnab Maitra highlighted NTPC’s continued commitment to inclusive development and described GEM as a flagship initiative for fostering future women leaders.
Scheduled to continue till July 30, the programme will involve academic instruction, creative sessions, and physical, mental, and emotional wellness activities.
As per NTPC, the mission has already reached over 12,700 girls across various locations nationwide and remains a cornerstone of the organisation’s social responsibility, with a focus on gender equity and community development.
