NAGAON, July 8: A 10-day theatre workshop in memory of noted dramatist Bijay Shankar Saikia began on Tuesday at the historic Karayani Bordunga field in Nagaon.
Organised by Jyoti Shilpa and supported by the Kolongpariya Bargoyan Somaj, the workshop is open to students of all age groups and aims to promote theatre and drama among children and young adults.

Participants have been divided into two groups—one for students under 14 years of age and another for those above 14.
The workshop will conclude with the staging of two plays at the Nagaon District Library auditorium, showcasing the talent and training of the young performers.
The inaugural session was held at the temple hall of the Karayani Bargoyan Somaj and was ceremonially opened by Dr Jahannara Begum, a doctor and actress from Tezpur.
In her address, Dr Begum highlighted the transformative power of theatre, stating that involvement in drama fosters character development and instills a sense of social responsibility among children.
Several dignitaries attended the event and paid tribute to Bijay Shankar Saikia for his contributions to theatre.
Among them were Dr Paran Goswami, Nirupam Koch, and former advocate Dehiram Bora, who spoke on the enduring value of art and culture in society.
Biren Bora, a journalist from a satellite TV channel in the Karayani area, mentored the inaugural session.
Organisers expressed hope that the workshop will ignite interest in the dramatic arts and help nurture a new generation of theatre enthusiasts in the region.
The planned performances at the end of the workshop are expected to reflect the participants’ learning and dedication.
