GUWAHATI, July 17: In a remarkable instance of rural empowerment through skill development, Dipom Horo, a youth from Dengaon, Christian Basti in Samelangso Block of Karbi Anglong district, has successfully charted a new path for himself through the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY).
This was stated in an official release issued by the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM) on Thursday.
Belonging to a modest family background, Horo’s early life was marked by limited financial means and few employment opportunities.
However, in 2023, he came to know about the DDU-GKY scheme, a Central Government initiative that aims to equip rural youth with market-relevant skills.
In Assam, the programme is implemented by ASRLM.
Dipom enrolled in a three-month residential training in the Food & Beverage Trade under the guidance of project-implementing agency Avitus Mirza.
The programme not only trained him in core hospitality operations but also helped build his confidence, discipline, and communication skills — critical components for professional success.
Following his successful completion of the training, Dipom was recruited by Spectrum Resort, Spa & Convention, a five-star establishment in Udaipur.
He now earns a monthly salary of ₹20,000 along with additional benefits such as free food, accommodation, and staff amenities.
He is currently supporting his family and has emerged as a role model for youth in his village and nearby areas.
“This training changed my life. I never imagined I’d be working in such a beautiful place and earning this much. I am thankful to DDUGKY and ASRLM for giving me this opportunity,” Dipom was quoted as saying in the official statement.
The release further noted that Dipom Horo’s story reflects the transformative potential of the DDU-GKY scheme in providing sustainable livelihoods to rural youth and enabling socio-economic upliftment across the state.
