KOKRAJHAR, July 23: In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, more than 200 individuals, including suspended General Secretary of the Kokrajhar District Congress Committee Habil Ali Sheikh, formally joined the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) at a mass induction rally held at Galajhora, Nayekgaon in Baukhungri constituency of Kokrajhar district.
The new members were welcomed by local MLA Lawrence Islary and UPPL leader Khampa Borgoyary, who presented them with traditional scarves and the party symbol during the event.
With elections around the corner, the UPPL has intensified its campaign efforts in Baukhungri, a known stronghold of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), where senior BPF leader and incumbent council member Doneswar Goyary has secured consecutive victories for four terms.
In a move to challenge Goyary’s dominance in the region, UPPL has entrusted BTC Executive Member Ranjit Basumatary with the responsibility of leading the campaign in the constituency.
Speaking to the media after the event, Ranjit Basumatary claimed that the UPPL is in a strong position in Baukhungri, citing internal party assessments.
He stated that growing public support from all communities in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) was a reflection of the party’s governance under BTC Chief Executive Member Promod Boro, particularly in areas such as peace-building, coordination among communities, land rights, and resolution of longstanding ethnic concerns.
Commenting on ongoing eviction drives across Assam, Basumatary remarked, “BTR is different from the rest of Assam.
While ‘eviction’ is taking place in other districts of Assam, under Promod Boro’s leadership, what’s happening in BTR is ‘ejection’.”
He emphasized that there is a significant distinction between the two.
Reflecting on the past, Basumatary said the region had suffered during the decades-long Bodo movement, but since December 15, 2020, when Promod Boro assumed leadership of BTR, peace and normalcy have returned, bringing relief to the people.
