NAGAON, July 28: A major irregularity has come to light in the Nagaon district education department, where a government school teacher currently in jail has been drawing his regular salary for nearly five months, according to reports.
Mainul Haque, a postgraduate teacher at Rupahi Higher Secondary School, has been lodged in Nagaon Special Jail for over four months and 28 days.
He is under judicial custody in connection with a case registered under Sections 120(B) and 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
Despite his incarceration, the district education department has reportedly sanctioned “earned leave” to Haque effective from March 1, enabling him to continue receiving his monthly salary.
The development has raised serious questions regarding procedural lapses and accountability within the education department.
Concerns have also been raised over the role of the school principal and the managing committee, who were reportedly aware of Haque’s judicial custody but did not intervene to stop the salary disbursal.
The matter has triggered strong reactions from the local academic community, which has demanded a high-level inquiry to ascertain whether there was collusion between the jailed teacher and senior officials of the education department.
