GUWAHATI, Aug 4: Gauhati University held an inspiring orientation programme for the third batch of its Five-Year Integrated Masters’ Programme (FYIMP) at the Birinchi Kumar Baruah Auditorium on Monday, welcoming over 900 new students.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Chancellor Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta recited the Sanskrit shloka “Kak chesta bako dhyanam, shwan nidra tathaiva cha, alpahari grihtyaagi, vidyarthi pancha lakshanam,” highlighting five essential qualities of an ideal student—perseverance like a crow, focus like a crane, alertness like a dog, moderation in consumption, and detachment from material comforts.
He urged students to adopt these traits to achieve academic excellence and serve society.
Guwahati Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta interacted with the students, stressing their responsibilities and the supportive role of parents.
“The true rebellion of a student lies in their pursuit of knowledge, not in the chase for possessions,” he said.
Devasish Sharma, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Nagaon, sang Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s Manuhe Manuhor Babe, calling upon students to embrace values of humanity and social responsibility—evoking a strong emotional response from the audience.
The event was attended by Prof Utpal Sarma, Registrar; Prof Rajib Handique, Academic Registrar; Dr Hemanta Kumar Nath, Secretary, University Classes; Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Director, Students’ Welfare; and Manas Pratim Kalita, President of the Post-Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU), alongside parents, faculty, and staff members, reflecting a collective institutional commitment.
The induction programme will continue till August 13, offering students deeper engagement with the university’s ethos and academic environment.
