GUWAHATI, Sept 21: The Assam Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan on Sunday approved several important decisions, including sanctioning land for the cremation ground and memorial of cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
A plot has been identified at Hatimura, Kamarkuchi NC village under Panbari Mouza of Sonapur Revenue Circle in Kamrup (M) district for the memorial, where Garg’s last rites will be performed on September 23.
The Cabinet granted administrative approval for the establishment of the 10th AP Battalion at Sonapur (Phase-I) at a cost of Rs 260 crore.

It further approved entrusting the operation of Jyoti Bishnu Prekhyagriha—a 5,000-seat auditorium in Guwahati—to the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra Society, Panjabari, while maintenance will remain under the PWD (Building) Department.
In another decision, remuneration, leave entitlements and an annual appraisal format were approved for 65 Science and Mathematics Facilitators engaged through the Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council.
They will now receive Rs 34,800 per month along with 12.7% CPF, a 5% annual increment subject to appraisal, and casual and maternity leave benefits.
They will also be covered under the Mukhya Mantri Lok Sevak Arogya Yojana (MMLSAY).
The Cabinet further approved setting of question papers for the Combined Competitive (Preliminary) Examination conducted by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) in both English and Assamese.
However, comprehension questions in General Studies Paper-II will continue to be set only in English.
The APSC Mains Examination is already bilingual. Additionally, the Cabinet announced a 20% bonus for tea garden workers under the Assam Tea Corporation ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja.
