GUWAHATI, Sept. 28: Following a decisive victory in the recently concluded Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) on Sunday staked claim to form the next council, with party supremo Hagrama Mohilary set to take oath as BTC Chief on October 5 in Kokrajhar.

The newly elected BPF representatives, led by Mohilary, met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan and formally invited him to attend the swearing-in ceremony as the Chief Guest. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is also scheduled to be present at the event.

Mohilary, who was unanimously elected by the party’s policy-making body to head the new council, said, “We met the governor and staked claim to form the next council. We also invited him to be a part of our oath-taking ceremony on October 5. He has given verbal assurance to attend it. The governor said it is his birthday on October 3. If he comes to the oath-taking, we will together celebrate his special day also.”

The BPF, which had headed the BTC since its formation in 2005 before being ousted in the 2020 polls, won 28 out of 40 seats in the election. The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had jointly run the administration for the last five years but contested separately, secured seven and five seats respectively.

Mohilary added that the BPF will welcome support from any party, including UPPL or BJP, if offered. “I have seen that the Chief Minister has said that we will work together as NDA allies. We welcome it,” he said, adding that he will meet the Chief Minister later in the day to invite him to the oath-taking ceremony.

Earlier, outgoing BTC Chief Pramod Boro of UPPL met the Governor to submit his resignation. “As per the rule, I have met the governor and given my resignation. The new council will be formed soon. We are grateful to the people of BTC for giving us the opportunity to lead it for the last five years. We accept the mandate and will keep working for our people,” he said.

The swearing-in ceremony on October 5 is expected to witness a grand gathering in Kokrajhar, marking the beginning of the new BPF-led administration in BTC. (With inputs from PTI)
