SIVASAGAR, Oct 16: A massive protest rally shook the Sivasagar district administration on Wednesday as members of the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students Union (AAKRSU) staged a demonstration demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Koch Rajbongshi community across the Brahmaputra Valley.
The rally culminated near the historic Shivadoul, where protesters clashed with police barricades. AAKRSU president Bikrom Das and secretary Sankarjyoti Dutta led the agitation and strongly reiterated their long-standing demand for ST status.
In their speeches, the leaders criticized the All Assam Tribal Sangha for opposing the inclusion of six ethnic communities in the ST list, including the Koch Rajbongshis. They asserted that the BJP government must fulfill its pre-election promise and take concrete steps toward granting ST status to the community.
A memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister was handed over to Neki Syed Baruah, Circle Officer of Sivasagar, on behalf of the District Commissioner.
