Kati Bihu observed with lamps and prayers

DIPHU, Oct 18: Residents of Diphu observed Kati Bihu, also known as Kongali Bihu, by lighting earthen lamps at their gates, a practice adapted in urban areas from the traditional custom of lighting lamps near Tulsi plants in paddy fields.

The festival is marked by prayers for a good harvest during a time when food stocks are low in granaries. This year, Kati Bihu coincided with Dhanteras, a day before Diwali, prompting people to also decorate their homes with colourful lights.
