NAGAON, Oct 31: A three-day ‘Hands-on Training Programme on Motorised Spinning, Natural Dyeing on Eri Silk and Making of Value-Added Products from Eri Silk’ concluded at Nagaon University on Friday. Organised by the DST STI Hub, Department of Zoology, the programme aimed to empower local youth, women and entrepreneurs by developing scientific skills in Eri silk processing and value addition.
The event was inaugurated by Dr Hitesh Deka, Vice Chancellor of Nagaon University, who appreciated the initiative for integrating traditional weaving and dyeing practices with modern scientific techniques. Dr Bhuban Ch Chutia, Principal Investigator of the DST STI Hub, coordinated the training and explained that participants learned natural dye extraction and application, motorised spinning and designing diverse products from Eri silk.

Over 60 participants from Nagaon, Morigaon, and Sonitpur districts took part in the programme, which concluded with live demonstrations, interactive sessions and hands-on practice modules. The initiative highlights efforts to promote Assam’s indigenous Eri silk industry, enhance value chain opportunities, and bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation.
