She was born on October 30, 1995, and got married on September 10, 2011, in accordance with Islamic rituals.

A court order in a domestic violence case involving the woman also stated that she was married when she was a minor, the official order said.

It said that the act constituted a violation of the Assam Panchayat Act, 1994 and the Assam Panchayat (Constitution) Rules, 1995.

“Farida Yeasmin, elected member of Ward No. 1, Mahguri Gaon Panchayat under Juria Development Block, is hereby disqualified and removed from the office of the Ward Member with immediate effect,” Nagaon DC said in his order.

He had said that because of operations against child marriage since 2021, more than 6,500 cases were registered and charge-sheets have been filed in 95 per cent of the cases. (PTI)
