SIVASAGAR, June 12: In commemoration of the World Day Against Child Labour, the Sivasagar district administration, Sivasagar Child Welfare department, and Child Protection Cell, Sivasagar, launched the ‘Suroxita Xaishab, Sonali Axom’ campaign in the district. The campaign, which will span 90 days, was inaugurated at the Sivasagar Girls’ College Auditorium. Aditya Vikram Yadav, the deputy commissioner of Sivasagar, expressed optimism that the campaign would have a positive impact on the issue of child labour in the district. In her speech, assistant commissioner Barnali Khatowara encouraged the Anganwadi workers present at the event to work diligently towards eradicating this menace.
Labour officer Prasanna Taye emphasised the importance of collaboration between all sectors of society to prevent child abuse. Manoj Kumar Borthakur, representing the media fraternity, strongly criticised certain educated and affluent individuals who support child labour, inflict harm on children by scalding them, and engage in sexual abuse. Monalish Sarma Rajkhowa, chairperson of the District Child Welfare Board, appealed for everyone’s assistance in combating child labour. Dr Bikash Ranjan Konwar, the district child protection officer, delivered the welcome address, and the meeting also featured speeches by Rupa Gogoi and Binirekha Gogoi Hazarika.
During the opening session, stakeholders discussed the issues in detail and formulated a roadmap to ensure the success of the 90-day campaign and its long-term impact. Anjali Arya, district child protection officer, presented the objectives of the campaign and highlighted how it will not only focus on urban areas but also reach out to rural areas by involving approximately 10 rural colleges in various revenue circles and development blocks of the district. The campaign includes extensive rescue operations, including activities in railway stations and other locations.
The 90-day campaign on child protection coincides with the World Day Against Child Labour and was followed by a signature campaign. Additionally, a street play highlighting the issue of child labour was performed, and an official mobile miking van was inaugurated to spread awareness against child labour.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by deputy superintendent of police, assistant commissioner, assistant labour commissioner, deputy CEO of Nagaon Zilla Parishad, members from NHRCCB, project director of NCLP, members of the State Women’s Commission, representatives from the health department, the chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, officials from children’s homes, members of the Juvenile Justice Board, the District Information and Public Relations Officer, the district project officer of SSA, members of various NGOs, and other concerned officials, as stated in an official release.
The campaign is being organised by the District Child Protection Unit in collaboration with the district administration of Sonitpur, Assam, and supported by the State Child Protection Society and the department of Women and Child Development.
During the event, Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra emphasised the importance of education in eradicating social evils against children. He highlighted the various schemes implemented by the government of Assam for the welfare of children and commended the initiative taken by the department of Women and Child Development. Mishra stressed that it is the collective responsibility of society to ensure the well-being of children until they reach 18 years of age, enabling them to become responsible citizens of the country.
MLA Tezpur Prithiraj Rava, in his speech, urged the department to ensure that the awareness program reaches even the most remote corners of the district, targeting the rural masses for effective implementation.
The 90-day campaign aims to protect children from harm and uphold their rights, creating a nurturing environment for their growth and development. It seeks to raise awareness among the public about the importance of safeguarding children from physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as ensuring their access to education, healthcare, and other basic needs. The program, launched on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, focused on the theme of child labour. As part of the event, a street play highlighting the issue of child labour was performed at Court Chariali in Tezpur. A signature campaign and mobile announcements were also conducted.
Devojyoti Bhuyan, secretary-cum-judicial officer of DLSA Jorhat, addressed the gatherings at both locations, emphasising the significance of eradicating child labour. He urged the garden workers to make school education mandatory for their children and highlighted the importance of safeguarding children’s rights by being vigilant and preventing any violations.
Lakhiram Tanti and Bijit Mahanta, both para legal volunteers of DLSA Jorhat, also spoke about the subject, providing insights into child labour prohibition laws and child rights. Leaflets containing information on these topics were distributed among the attendees at both tea gardens. Officials from both estates were present during the occasion, demonstrating their commitment to combating child labour.
