Guwahati, Nov 14: Assam’s rural governance system received a financial push as the Union Government released the latest XV Finance Commission grants for the Financial Year 2025–26. The release covers the second instalment of Untied Grants for 2024–25, amounting to Rs.219.24 crore, meant for 27 District Panchayats, 182 Block Panchayats and 2,192 Gram Panchayats across the State. Another Rs.4.698 crore from the earlier withheld portion of the first instalment has also been released for 26 eligible Block Panchayats.
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti recommend the grants, which are issued by the Ministry of Finance in two instalments each year. These funds support the functioning of Panchayati Raj Institutions and Rural Local Bodies as outlined in the Finance Commission framework.
The Untied Grants may be used for location-based requirements under the 29 subjects listed in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution, excluding salaries and establishment costs. The Tied Grants may be used for sanitation, ODF maintenance, household waste management, faecal sludge management, drinking water supply, rainwater harvesting and water recycling.
The latest release allows rural local bodies in Assam to take forward ongoing work connected to local needs and essential services.
