Born into a farmer’s family, Kurmi joined the CPI (M) in 1973 and played a key role in strengthening the party’s organisational setup in the region. A reputed farmer, he was known for ploughing his fields with buffaloes—a tradition still maintained by Kurmi families and admired by visitors during the summer season.

Apart from his political contributions, Kurmi was a pioneer in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Kurmi community. Closely associated with the Vaishnav tradition under the guidance of the late Trithanath Goswami at Naharkhat Satra in Mudoigaon, he was also a trained Sankari artiste, performing as both Gayan and Sutradhar. His contributions included leading performances at the historic Baresohoriya Bhaona at Jamugurihat.

Tributes poured in from across the region, with representatives from Kurmi Society, Sootea, the Sootea branch of CPI(M), Kurmigaon VDC, Uttar Sootea High School, Sootea Press Club and MLA Prabin Hazarika paying homage before his last rites were performed. He is survived by his daughter, son-in-law and numerous relatives. The community mourns the passing of a leader who left a lasting impact on both political and cultural life in northern Sootea.
