Karbi Anglong observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities

KAAC distributes financial aid, mobility aids and promotes disability-inclusive development

DIPHU, Dec 3: The District Social Welfare (DSW) Department under the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) organised a special program on Wednesday to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the Home for Destitute and Vagrant Children, Birla. The event aimed to highlight the abilities, rights and well-being of people with disabilities, while promoting an inclusive society.

Physically challenged persons from both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts participated in the celebration, receiving recognition from the government. As part of the event, one-time financial assistance was provided along with support materials such as wheelchairs, elbow crutches and hearing aids.

District Social Welfare Officer Dr Sayed Nasiur Rahman highlighted the theme for 2025, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” emphasising the need for communities where individuals with disabilities are fully included in education, employment, healthcare and social activities. He said the goal is to ensure equal opportunities, respect and active participation, which ultimately drives broader social progress.

Executive Member in charge of DSW, Rina Terangpi, stressed that persons with disabilities are capable of achieving great things, citing examples from sports, academics and government services. She also spoke about the launch of various government schemes for their upliftment. Sharing her personal experience with her physically challenged son, Terangpi encouraged parents to embrace challenges with positivity.

Chief Executive Member of KAAC, Dr Tuliram Ronghang, as the chief guest, reiterated the importance of respecting and supporting physically challenged persons, emphasising their determination and willpower. He assured continued support from KAAC and distributed one-time financial grants of Rs 2,000 each to 150 PWDs from Karbi Anglong and 100 from West Karbi Anglong. Wheelchairs, elbow crutches and hearing aids were also provided to those in need. Additionally, selected Self Help Groups (SHGs) from 26 MAC constituencies received Rs 10,000 each.

The program was attended by KAAC Chairman Raju Tisso, EMs, MAC members, MLAs Darsing Ronghang, Bidyasing Engleng, Rupsing Teron and District Commissioner Nirola Phangchopi, marking a collective effort to promote inclusion, respect and empowerment for persons with disabilities in the region.
