GUWAHATI, Dec 10: A man lost his life on Monday afternoon at a road accident at the Borghat Bypass near Nagaon. The incident has once again highlighted the poor traffic safety measures in the busy junction, raising questions about ongoing negligence by authorities and the increasing danger for daily commuters.
The victim, identified as local resident Domboru Saikia, was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a truck bearing registration NL 01 AD 4706. He was rushed towards a hospital in Guwahati, but doctors declared him dead on the way. Residents said that minor and major accidents have been occurring frequently in this stretch, yet most of them do not get proper attention, nor are the root causes addressed.
Locals claimed that vehicle movement in Borghat Junction has become highly disorderly, with little to no monitoring from traffic police. They said that even though a new bus stand is coming up in the area, there is still no system in place to regulate vehicle flow. People also pointed out that patrolling by Borghat Police Outpost remains inadequate, despite the area being a high-traffic zone.
The absence of proper safety measures from road and transport authorities, including four-lane officials, has made the bypass increasingly unsafe, according to residents.
