MARGHERITA, Dec 23: Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Margherita Regional Committee, along with local residents of Ledo, staged a protest programme on Tuesday at NH-315 near Ledo College Tiniali, demanding an immediate and complete halt to the alleged unrestricted drug trade in the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency under Tinsukia district.

The protest was organised at NH-315 near the Ledo College Tiniali road under the Margherita co-district. As part of the agitation, AJYCP members took out a procession that began from the Ledo College Tiniali road, passed through the busy Ledo market area near the petrol pump and culminated at the same location.

The protest programme was led by Kanchan Bora, vice-president of the AJYCP Tinsukia District Committee, along with advisor Jadu Sonowal and Bimal Singh, president of the AJYCP Margherita Regional Committee. A large number of student activists participated in the programme, raising slogans against drug peddling and demanding strict action from the authorities.

AJYCP leaders alleged that the drug menace has been steadily increasing in areas under the jurisdiction of the Margherita Police Station and the Ledo Police Outpost. They accused the Margherita co-district administration, Margherita police and Ledo police outpost of failing to effectively curb the illegal trade and warned that continued inaction would have serious consequences for the youth and the social fabric of the region.

Addressing the protesters, Kanchan Bora said it was unfortunate and painful that educated youths of the Margherita region were falling prey to illicit banned drugs and other intoxicants. He warned that if the situation continues, the future of Margherita and its adjoining areas would be severely affected. He urged the Margherita MLA, the co-district administration and the police to take immediate action against drug traders and peddlers, failing which the organisation would launch stronger agitational programmes across the Margherita region in the coming days.

The protesters also called upon the concerned authorities to intensify surveillance, take decisive action against drug networks and ensure a drug-free environment in the coal belt areas of the 83rd Margherita LAC under Tinsukia district.
