MANGALDAI, Jan 1: The National Road Safety Month was officially launched in Darrang district on Thursday with a public event at Bhebarghat public station.
District Commissioner Parag Kumar Kakaty inaugurated the month-long programme in the presence of drivers and owners of commercial passenger vehicles, police officials, members of the local traffic police, media personnel and other stakeholders. In his address, DC Kakaty emphasised the urgent need to reduce road accidents, noting the devastating impact they can have on families. He highlighted the responsibility of passenger vehicle drivers in ensuring the safety of the 35–40 passengers they carry and urged strict adherence to road safety norms.
Superintendent of Police, Darrang, Hemanta Kr Das, said that India records nearly 5 lakh road accidents annually, claiming around 2 lakh lives. He stressed that such incidents not only cause human suffering but also affect the nation’s economy, underscoring the importance of efforts to curb accidents for broader economic progress.
Senior journalist and NGO activist Mayukh Goswami addressed the gathering, highlighting the road safety situation in Darrang district. He revealed that 206 people lost their lives in 568 road accidents in the past two years.
District Transport Officer (in-charge) Dipak Patowary, Enforcement Inspector Om Prakash Upadhyaya and other transport department officials were also present.
The launch was followed by an awareness auto-rickshaw rally through Mangaldai town to spread road safety messages among the public.
