GUWAHATI, Jan 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday formally launched its statewide wall-writing and wall-painting campaign ahead of the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, expected to be held in March–April, with senior leaders kicking off the drive simultaneously in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat.
The campaign was inaugurated in Guwahati by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia.
Painting the party’s election symbol, the lotus, on a wall, Sarma said the wall-writing drive would be carried out across the state within a fixed timeframe, with prior permission to be taken from wall owners to strengthen mass outreach.
He said the slogans would highlight the work done by BJP-led governments in Assam over the past several years and reflect the party’s ideology.
State election management committee convener Pradan Baruah and Dispur MLA Akon Bora were among those present.
Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the campaign in Dibrugarh, where he painted the lotus symbol on a wall near the Shani Temple at Thanachariali, carrying the message “Vote for BJP for a Developed Assam.”
Addressing party workers, Sonowal said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam, the pace of development in the state had accelerated and would further gain momentum in the coming days.
Similar wall-painting programmes were organised in other parts of Dibrugarh, including Rotary Road, where Assam Cabinet minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli and BJP leader Rituparna Barua participated.
A large number of BJP workers and supporters took part, raising slogans in support of the party.
Speaking to reporters, Phukan said the BJP had formally commenced its election campaign with only 81 days remaining for the polls and claimed that the NDA was preparing to secure victory in 103 Assembly constituencies.
In Jorhat, Union minister of State Pabitra Margherita launched the wall-writing campaign for the Jorhat Assembly constituency under the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat.
Painting the party symbol at Khujurguri on the outskirts of the town, Margherita said the BJP had begun seeking the blessings of the people to form the government for a third consecutive term.
He highlighted infrastructure development, increased investment flow, a violence-free environment, wildlife protection, eviction of encroachers from government land, economic growth, transparency and good governance under BJP rule.
Margherita said the campaign would cover all ten Assembly constituencies under the Jorhat Lok Sabha segment, spanning Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.
Earlier in the day, he also inaugurated a model Anganwadi centre at Kolbari and laid foundation stones for the Kolbari Satsang Kendra and the Kolbari Mising Gaonburah road. Party leaders said that following the launch, BJP MPs, ministers, MLAs, office-bearers and grassroots representatives would simultaneously carry forward wall-writing activities across their respective areas as part of the party’s poll outreach programme.
