DIBRUGARH, Jan 8: National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday raises concern over the growing human-trafficking cases in some parts of Assam.
Speaking to reporters in Dibrugarh, Vijay Rahatkar, chairperson of NCW said, “In some areas of Assam, human trafficking has been going on and it is a concern for the people of the state. But in other states viz. Jharkhand, the trafficking has been going on and it is necessary to stop trafficking which has been going on largely”.
“National Commission of Women has been working seriously to stop the trafficking of women and child. Many a times, we have seen that the trafficking happens through rail route. Trafficking happens infront of your eyes but you don’t know. All the stakeholders working on such cases should have a proper training and awareness,” said Rahatkar.
“Yesterday, in Dibrugarh we held a conference on anti-human trafficking in association with Railway Police Force(RPF) personnel. Those who are working in railways are very important and they can play a crucial role to stop human-trafficking. Service provider staffs, Ticket collector and all the personnel involved with Railways are important to stop human-trafficking. NCW has been working on how to identify traffickers and how to stop trafficking and for that we are taking all steps to create awareness,” she said.
She added, “We are getting good response from the people and everybody has been coming forward to help us. The RPF, BSF, CISF and police are helping us to combat trafficking. The modus operandi of traffickers are changing everyday which is concerning for us”.
Human-trafficking cases have been growing in tea garden areas of Assam and the traffickers targets the vulnerable sections in the society.
“Child trafficking cases has been rises in tea gardens areas of Tinsukia district of Assam. In most of the casses, the traffickers took away the child by luring their parents and sold them to other states,” said a police official.
Recently, RPF have rescued many minors from Tinsukia Railway station and arrested the traffickers who has been planning to take them away to other state for jobs.
“Mostly human-trafficking take places through railway route. In many cases we have arrested the traffickers and rescued the womens and childrens. We have to work in close coordination to curb such crimes from the society,” said an official of railway police.
