KOKRAJHAR, Jan 16: The 74th Magh Mela cum 14th Indo-Bhutan Friendship Mela 2026 was inaugurated on Friday at Subankhata in Baksa district of the Bodoland Territorial Region, celebrating the enduring cultural bonds between India and Bhutan.
The week-long event aims to highlight the rich traditions, heritage and cultural diversity of both countries while strengthening people-to-people ties along the Indo-Bhutan border.
As part of the opening ceremony, the national flags of India and Bhutan were jointly hoisted by the Baksa district commissioner and the Dasho Dzongdag (deputy commissioner) of Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan, symbolising friendship, cooperation and mutual respect.
The mela will feature a range of cultural performances, traditional exhibitions and community interactions throughout the week.
Programmes showcasing traditional cuisine and interactive sessions involving local communities from both sides of the border have also been organised.
Organisers said the mela continues to draw large crowds from different districts of Assam as well as neighbouring Bhutan, and is widely regarded as a symbol of integration, harmony and tranquillity in the border region.
