7th Annual Children’s Bhaona Festival begins at Rongdoi

JORHAT, Jan 21: The 7th Annual All Assam Children’s Bhaona Festival began on January 18 at the Rangdoi D Gaon Bor Namghar premises (Loboram Saikia Public Playground), organised by Rangdoi D Gaon Yuvak Brinda with support from local villagers. The festival aims to introduce children to the Bhaona tradition, the cultural creation of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva.

On the opening day, “Rukmini Haran” was performed by the Jadumoni Cultural Group of Chenijaan. Over the subsequent days, plays by 12 children’s Bhaona groups from across Assam were staged, including “Ambaar Dehatyag,” “Bipra Damodar Akhyan,” “Dhruva Charitra,” “Dushyanta–Shakuntala Reunion,” “Garudar Amrit Haran” and “Daksha Yagna.”

The festival will continue until January 24, featuring performances like “Shakuni’s Revenge,” “Lakshman Barjan,” “Shri Shri Rama’s Defeat and Sita’s Descent to the Netherworld,” and concluding with “Bhagavat Darshan” by the host group. The prize distribution ceremony and results announcement will take place on the final day.

The festival has attracted large crowds, celebrating Assam’s rich Bhaona heritage and encouraging children’s participation in traditional performing arts.
