DIPHU, Jan 27: The 77th Republic Day, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of India, was celebrated with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour across Karbi Anglong district on Monday, with the main district-level function held at the Diphu Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School playground.
Organised by the Karbi Anglong district administration, the celebration witnessed participation from people of all ages and communities, reflecting unity in diversity.
Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, attended the programme as chief guest.
He inspected the guard of honour presented by contingents of paramilitary forces, Assam Police, Home Guards, NCC cadets and students from various schools before unfurling the national flag.
Addressing the gathering, Ronghang said Republic Day marked the adoption of the Constitution, which laid the foundation of India’s democratic republic based on justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
He noted that democracy was not merely a system of governance but a collective responsibility sustained through discipline, participation and service, adding that true progress required consistent and dedicated action.
The CEM thanked the Centre for shortlisting noted Karbi singer Pokhila Lekthepi for the Padma Shri Awards 2026.
Highlighting developmental initiatives undertaken by the KAAC, Ronghang said education remained a key priority.
He referred to the inauguration of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya at Nilip in November 2025, the Model Residential School at Dolamara in October 2025, and the commencement of academic activities at the Ekalavya Model Residential School at Donghap in November 2025.
He also mentioned the inauguration of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Avasiya Vidyalaya at Khatkhati in January 2026.
In the healthcare sector, Ronghang said access to quality medical services had improved with the inauguration of the 100-bedded district hospital at Hamren by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in September 2025.
Referring to infrastructure development, he said projects such as the RCC bridge over Amreng and road improvement from Kheroni to Rongpangbong to Zirikindeng had been inaugurated, while works including the Diphu flyover, Langhonjar Chingthong–Amri College road, Assam Mala Road from Tumpreng to Dongkamukam, and RCC bridges at Bhelapara and over the Kopili river at Tumpreng were at various stages of completion.
On skill development and livelihoods, the CEM said new ITI and polytechnic institutes at Kaliabor under Borjan constituency were inaugurated in August 2025.
Under PMKVY 4.0, skill training is being provided to 7,200 youth across Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong in various trades.
He added that an MoU had been signed with Bengaluru-based ‘Better Place’ to facilitate placement of trained candidates.
Ronghang also highlighted social security initiatives under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita scheme, under which beneficiaries in Diphu, Howraghat and Rongkhang legislative assembly constituencies had received financial assistance.
Referring to the long-standing demand for autonomous statehood, he said a significant milestone had been achieved with the introduction of the Assam Reorganisation (Karbi Dimanchal) Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha by MP Amarsing Tisso.
He urged people to reaffirm their commitment to unity, constitutional values and inclusive development.
Meanwhile, the 77th Republic Day was also celebrated at Bokajan with a grand programme organised by the Bokajan sub-divisional administration at the Bokajan Sports Association playground.
The event began at 8.45 am with SDO (Civil) Kakumoni Saikia unfurling the national flag and receiving the guard of honour.
In her address, Saikia paid tribute to the freedom fighters and underlined the significance of Republic Day.
The programme included a floral tribute and lighting of the ceremonial lamp in memory of the martyrs.
A march past by contingents of 2nd ASRF Karagaon, CRPF, Home Guards and local college students was the highlight of the event, drawing applause from spectators and concluding the celebrations on a note of renewed patriotism.
