DEMOW, Jan 29: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday distributed cheques of Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) worth Rs 10,000 each among women beneficiaries at Bakchu Koch Gaon Borbil Playground under Khelua Gaon Panchayat in Demow Constituency. The programme began with a welcome address by Sushanta Borgohain, MLA of Demow Constituency.

During the event, the Chief Minister virtually laid the foundation stones of several development projects, including the Demow Co-District Commissioner Office, improvement and upgradation of Sepon–Sunpura Road under Assam Mala 3.0, approach road from NH-37 to Sivasagar Medical College under SOPD-G and construction and upgradation of Bhekuri Chapori Road-cum-Embankment along with the embankment from Sesa Tiniali to Laibeel.

Addressing the public gathering, Dr Sarma spoke at length about the aims and objectives of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan and said that Wednesday marked their 95th such meeting. He informed that a total of 31,291 beneficiaries have been identified under MMUA in Demow Constituency alone. He added that through the MMUA scheme, around 32 lakh women across Assam will be benefited.

Highlighting other welfare initiatives for women, the Chief Minister said that under the Orunodoi scheme, about 40 lakh women have already been benefited. He also mentioned the Nijut Moina scheme, under which nearly four lakh girl students receive monthly financial assistance from the government for their education.

The Chief Minister appealed to the public to ensure the victory of sitting MLA Sushanta Borgohain in the upcoming elections. Criticising the Congress, Dr Sarma said that during its regime, welfare schemes were limited to distribution of lungi, dhoti, thread (suta), blankets (kombol) and mosquito nets (aathua), which he termed as “pancha amrit”.

The programme was attended by State Education Minister and Guardian Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, Kushal Dowari, former Thowra MLA, Topon Gogoi, former Jorhat MP, Mridul Yadav, District Commissioner of Sivasagar, Lukumoni Borah, Co-District Commissioner, along with several other dignitaries.

Later, while speaking to the media, the Chief Minister commented on the issue of SR, stating that filing complaints under the SR process is a national duty. He said that everyone in Assam is aware of the entry of Bangladeshi Miya immigrants into the state. He questioned that if no complaints are filed under the SR, it would imply that there are no foreign nationals in Assam.

Dr Sarma said that BJP workers have filed complaints against those they suspect to be foreigners so that the government and the Election Commission can examine them. He added that if no complaints are filed today and tomorrow someone claims the presence of foreigners in Assam, there would be no answer. Therefore, filing complaints under SR is a national responsibility and not limited to BJP alone, but also to other political parties and organisations.

He expressed concern that no complaints were filed by other parties, which would suggest that there are no foreigners in Assam. He asserted that BJP does not only speak but acts and that by filing over five lakh complaints, BJP workers have shown their commitment to opposing illegal foreigners. Otherwise, he said, everyone would have been legitimised. He concluded by stating that BJP has demonstrated that the Assamese people have not surrendered and that the party’s karyakartas have proved that resolve.
