DHUBRI, Jan 29: Tensions flared in Dhubri on Thursday as the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) district committee launched a major protest against the Assam government, alleging a targeted campaign to disenfranchise minorities through “fake notices” and the illegal deletion of names from official records.
The demonstration, marked by high-pitched slogans and large participation was led by MLA Nazrul Haque from Dhubri and MLA Nizanur Rahman from Gauripur. The protest march began at the AIUDF district office and concluded at the Dhubri District Commissioner’s office.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Nazrul Haque accused the state administration of systematically omitting the names of Indian minorities under the guise of verification. The party demanded immediate legal action against individuals filing “baseless and fraudulent” complaints and a halt to what it called the “illegal and random” deletion of minority names from government records. Haque also announced plans to seek legal recourse against recent derogatory remarks targeting the ‘Miya’ community.
The atmosphere outside the District Commissioner’s office remained charged as protesters raised slogans including “BJP Go Back” and “Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Murdabad,” accusing the state leadership of creating fear and instability among minorities.
MLA Nizanur Rahman said, “We will not tolerate the harassment of genuine Indian citizens through fake notices. This is a deliberate attempt to marginalise a specific community and we will take this fight to the Supreme Court.”
The AIUDF leadership submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner, outlining grievances and demanding a transparent investigation into the issuance of recent notices. The protest reflects the party’s hardening stance amid ongoing communal and administrative tensions in Assam.
