KOKRAJHAR, Feb 2: The fourth edition of the Mwihur International Theatre Festival commenced on Sunday evening at Bineswar Brahma Udyan, Chandamari, marking the start of a four-day celebration of theatre and performing arts in Kokrajhar.
Organised by the Lwrgi Theatre Group, the festival will run from February 1 to February 4 and brings together seven prominent theatre groups from across India, alongside an international ensemble from the United States.
Participating groups represent theatre circuits from Delhi, West Bengal and Assam, reflecting the festival’s growing national and international footprint.
The festival opened at 6 pm with the staging of the English-language play “(UN) Belonging” by the Ananya Dance Theatre from the United States.
The formal inauguration was carried out by BTC MCLA Jubiraj Basumatary.
Following the inaugural performance, the evening continued with the Bengali-language play “FULTAR”, presented by the Theatre Cine Group of West Bengal.
Directed by Subhajit Bandopadhyay, the production was staged at 7:30 pm and drew appreciation from the audience.
The inaugural programme was attended by several dignitaries, including BTC Executive Member Jubiraj Basumatary, president of the Kokrajhar District Bodo Cultural Association Bijit Giri Basumatary, director of the Lwrgi Theatre Group Sanjeev Brahma and president of the group Soumdan Brahma, among others.
As part of the festival’s outreach activities, painting and storytelling competitions are being organised on February 1 and 2 under Group A and Group B categories.
According to Soumdan Brahma, students from Class VI to Class XII representing various schools and colleges are participating in these competitions, aimed at encouraging creative expression among young learners alongside the main theatrical performances.
