KOKRAJHAR, Aug 19: The 24th death anniversary of Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma, former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, was observed at his burial place in Chandamari, Kokrajhar, on Monday. The event was attended by writers, student fraternities, and leaders representing various organisations across the region.
Notably, Bineswar Brahma, who was regarded as a harbinger of peace in the region among the Bodos and other downtrodden communities across the state, was shot dead by unknown miscreants on August 19, 2000 at his Bhetapara residence in Guwahati.
Brahma was a noted writer and one of the prominent intellectuals and social thinkers of the Bodo community. He was deputy general manager in FCI for the Northeast region, besides holding the presidency of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha when he was assassinated.
The death anniversary was organised by the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) and the Bineswar Brahma Charitable Trust (BBCT) to recall the contributions and dedication of the late Brahma.
Bodo Sahitya Sabha president, Dr Surath Narzary, hoisted the Sabha flag at half-mast, followed by a floral tribute to Brahma by his younger brother Sarbeswar Basumatary at his tomb.
Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Region; state cabinet minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma; ABSU president Dipen Boro; MLA Lawrence Islary; and citizens from all walks of life, along with many organisations like Bodo Sahitya Sabha, ABSU, ABWWF, All Bodo Primary Teachers Association (ABPTA), and Tribal Sangha attended the occasion to pay floral tribute to Bineswar Brahma.
CEM Pramod Boro, while paying homage to the late Bineswar Brahma, recalled the contributions of Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma, former president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, towards the upliftment and development of Bodo literature and language in the state on his anniversary. He said that Bineswar Brahma had dedicated and sacrificed his life for the welfare and upliftment of the Bodos in his time. He was a social thinker and a noted writer among the Bodos.
Boro stated that Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma was a harbinger of peace in the region and an extraordinary leader of both the Sabha and the Bodo community. Despite holding a high official position in FCI, Brahma dedicated his life to the development of the Bodos.
He further added that the late Brahma’s contribution and dedication were endless, as he consistently worked to promote a healthy and integrated society in the state.
“Today, I paid my floral tributes to Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma on the solemn occasion of his death anniversary,” Boro said. “The late Brahma, a scholarly agronomist, devoted social activist, and former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, dedicated his life to fostering peace and harmony in our region. His ideals continue to guide us as we strive to build the peaceful, smart, and green Bodoland of his dreams.”
Boro informed that the government of BTR has established Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma Knowledge Centers and digital libraries at various VCDCs in the Bodoland region to explore the ideology and philosophy of Bineswar Brahma.
Bodo Sahitya Sabha president, Dr Surath Narzary, mentioned that the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Bineswar Brahma Charitable Trust jointly observed the death anniversary and remembered Brahma’s contributions to Bodo language and literature. He said that the Bodo Sahitya Sabha continues to emphasise preserving the ideology and philosophy of Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma. The Bodo Sahitya Sabha is committed to the welfare and upliftment of the Bodo language and literature in the country.
